April 18, 2024: The Japan Seismic Isolation Association (JSSI) held a special event to celebrate its 30th anniversary: "Special Lecture by Mr. Kani Nagahide." As the only Taiwanese member of JSSI, Taiwan Matsuzawa Seismic Isolation Equipment Co., Ltd. was honored to participate and celebrate this significant milestone with JSSI.

During the lecture, attendees gained in-depth insights into JSSI's history, focusing on its development and contributions. The association's origins trace back to the late 1970s to early 1980s when Tokyo Architectural Research Institute's seismic isolation experts frequently exchanged ideas. In 1981, major structural engineers established the "Structural Engineers Discussion Group," which later became the "Japan Association of Structural Engineers" in 1989. On June 17, 1993, the Japan Seismic Isolation Association was officially founded, providing an important platform for the research and application of seismic isolation technology.

The lecture also introduced the origins of seismic isolation and damping technologies. The 1975 earthquake in Oita Prefecture spurred the Japanese construction industry’s interest in damping methods, prompting the exploration of new damping technologies. In 1978, simulation experiments with damping devices installed between buildings and their foundations laid the groundwork for future seismic isolation applications.

In 1980, Japan's first seismic-isolated building was completed, marking a significant milestone and demonstrating the potential of seismic isolation technology in practical applications. Subsequently, in 1989, damping structures were first applied in Takamatsu Construction's Shimura Dormitory, marking a breakthrough in damping technology within the construction industry.

In the late 1980s, during the early phase of the bubble economy, seismic isolation methods began to be applied in high-rise buildings. In 1990, Takamatsu Construction launched the "Takamatsu 100 Plan," aimed at applying damping methods to large buildings. However, with the death of key construction ministry officials and the collapse of the bubble economy, the plan was eventually halted. In 1994, Mr. Kani Nagahide resigned from Takamatsu Construction.

Starting in 1995, the Tokyo Architectural Research Institute undertook a series of seismic-isolated building design projects, playing a crucial role in the development of Japan's seismic isolation technology.

The JSSI's 30th-anniversary special lecture provided participants with a deep understanding of the history of seismic isolation and damping structures, while also witnessing JSSI's key role in Japanese seismic technology. Through this event, participants not only enhanced their understanding of JSSI but also deeply appreciated the importance of seismic and damping technologies in the construction industry.
